Most probably is coin washing https://invezz.com/news/2020/06/11/ethereum-price-moves-higher-whale-pays-2-6m-in-transaction-fees/

The transaction is easily traceable, would be a very bad move if it was really coin washing. Personally, i don’t think so.

ETH10,666 is the reward the miner got in the blocks where the transaction took place

A supposedly impossible, isolated occurrence. Must have been a freak accident (committed by a human) since this is highly unexpected for fees that are normally and predictably an insignificant amount.

That’s happening a lot these days. There’s only speculation at this point. 1. money laundering 2. extortion 3. hackers.
Da Hongfei and others tweeted about it.

Looks like the transaction fee is intentionally paid through the apps/ exchange/ wallet that he is using. Meaning the transaction fee will go to that entity. It could not be a bug.

A new theory has been developing “An exchange is being blackmailed by hackers”.
In a recent tweet, Vitalik Buterin said:
“So the million-dollar txfees *may* actually be blackmail.
The theory: hackers captured partial access to exchange key; they can’t withdraw but can send no-effect txs with any gasprice. So they threaten to “burn” all funds via txfees unless compensated.” https://twitter.com/VitalikButerin/status/1271463564440678401
Someone being funny replied: “For those looking for an english version:” and shared the following link which explains this in simple language:

Mmm… don’t think so https://www.reddit.com/r/ethereum/comments/h089r9/transaction_paid_10k_eth_in_fees_to_transfer_055/
”
lukarmari: Well my understanding was once you broadcast a transaction to the network all the pools / solo miners start the mining process so unless the miners themselves can collaborate (kind of Byzantine tolerance being broken) there is no way to determine which miner’s block will the transaction end up in. How could a scheme like this work (meaning how do I essentially choose a miner)?
Iron0ne: This is the truth. This would be a retarded way to launder coins are anyone mining would have as good a change as you to get the coins

It is also likely that it was an automated payment or a script having a bug resulting in this huge txn fee.
